Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in January to commemorate the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King. King is remembered for his nonviolent activism during the civil rights movement, and shortly after his assassination in 1968 a campaign was begun to create a holiday in his honor. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed in some states on January 20, 1986. It was officially observed in all 50 states in 2000.
To find information in the library on Martin Luther King and the holiday in his honor type the following subjects into the search box of the Marinet catalog: Martin Luther King, and Martin Luther King Day. Related information can be found under Civil Rights Movement, and African Americans Civil Rights.
