Construction crews were out in full force this morning at the Novato Library! Teams of children and adults designed, constructed and tested buildings made of straw, sticks and bricks as part of the Summer Reading Program “3 Little Pigs: The Science Behind the Story.”
After retelling the story of the Three Little Pigs, we discussed our challenge question, formed a hypothesis and got down to the nitty-gritty of testing our theories. The challenge quickly morphed into “how can we construct stronger houses than the 3 Little Pigs?” with some fantastic results! As a group we were able to construct 9 straw houses, 10 stick homes and 12 brick buildings that refused to be knocked down!
All in all, our observations led us to conclude that the pyramid design is a very sturdy building shape, leaving “somewhere for air to go” helps houses withstand wind forces and building with friends and family ROCKS!
