Yesterday the finalists for the National Book Award were announced. The fiction finalists are:
The Yellow Birds, by Iraq war veteran Kevin Powers
Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, a first novel by Ben Fountain
A Hologram for the King, by Bay Area writer Dave Eggers
The Round House, by Louise Erdrich
This is How You Lose Her, short stories by Junot Diaz, who recently won a MacArthur "genius grant."
In the non-fiction category, finalists are:
Iron Curtain: the Crushing of Eastern Europe, by Anne Applebaum
Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity, by Katharine Boo
The Passage of Power, fourth volume of Robert A Caro's series on Lyndon B. Johnson
The Boy Kings of Texas, a memoir by Domingo Martinez
House of Stone: A Memoir of Home, Family, and a Lost Middle East, by Anthony Shadid.
Winners will be announced in New York on November 14.
