What began at the turn of the century as an attempt to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions of the first Americans has resulted in a whole month being designated for this purpose. In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution declaring November 1990 “Native American National Heritage Month”. Similar proclamations, with variations on the name, have been issued each year since 1994.
