National Grandparents Day is the first Sunday in September after Labor Day.  The idea for this holiday originated with Marian McQuade, a homemaker in West Virginia, who wanted to champion the cause of lonely, elderly residents of nursing homes.  She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to show an interest in the knowledge their grandparents could share.  President Jimmy Carter proclaimed Grandparents Day a national holiday in 1978.

To find books in the library on grandparents type Grandparents as a subject heading into the Classic Catalog.  If you type Grandparents into the search box of the Discovery Catalog you get slightly different results.  Try the following subject headings in either catalog to get more information:  Grandfathers, Grandmothers, Grandparent and Child, Aging Parents.
