Today is the 70th anniversary of the surprise attack by the Japanese on the naval base at Pear Harbor on the morning of December 7, 1941. Eight U.S. Navy battleships were damaged and four were sunk. The Japanese also sank or damaged many other ships and aircraft, and thousands of Americans were killed or wounded. The attack came as a complete shock to the American people and led directly to the American entry into World War II. On December 8, 1941, the United States declared war on Japan.
