How do I get a library card?

You may apply for and receive your library card at any of our branches.

If you wish, you can print out a card application in English or en Español, fill it out, and bring it into a branch. However, printed applications are always available at all of our branches.

In order to verify name and address, you must present the following:

  • A valid driver's license or passport with current address

OR

  • A photo ID plus a copy of a bill or other statement on which your current name and address are printed

The signature of a parent or guardian is required for applicants under the age of sixteen. The parent or guardian must show ID on behalf of the minor.

How much does a library card cost?

Library cards are free for California State Residents.

Non-residents of California may be issued a card for three months, and are required to pay a fee of $10 at the time of registration.

What should I do if I lose my library card?

Report the lost card immediately to any branch library.

You may do so by phone or in person. You are responsible for materials taken out with the card until the card is reported lost or stolen. Bring a photo ID to any of our branches to receive a replacement card. There is a $1.00 fee for a replacement card.

E-Cards

If you do not yet have a Marin County Free Library card, you may apply for an e-card online. This will allow you to request materials and access most of our digital content from almost anywhere with an Internet connection. You may convert this to a full service card by visiting a branch library and showing proper identification.

Fees

An official list of fees that may be assessed to cardholders may be found in our Hours and Fees handout. [PDF]
